Introduction
The Sheltowee Environmental Education is volunteering to assist personnel with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge to design and build wetlands to provide breeding habitat for the rare Crawfish Frog. Three-wetlands were designed to have the unique hydroperiod necessary for crawfish frog eggs to hatch and larvae to develop. The wetlands may be built at a low cost with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service providing heavy equipment and operators. Additional funding is needed to make this project possible.
The Crawfish Frog is a rare species that requires vernal pond wetlands for breeding
